Mokume Shibori Indigo Dyed Cotton Scarf/Shawl design worked within a shape
Mokume is a stitch resist type of shibori that creates a wood grain looking pattern. The technique can be worked quicker if you happen to own a smocking/pleater machine, but I find the spacing too perfect and the wood grain look isn’t as interesting. The perfectly imperfect hand stitched mokume creates a much more pleasing outcome.
Choose any shape you want and trace onto your fabric with a water soluble marker. Using a double strand of thread, make rows of running stitches inside the shape leaving long tails to gather later. The rows of stitching should be parallel but vary your stitch length to get the best results.
When all of your stitching within the shape is completed, gather tightly and knot ends.
Dye in your indigo vat, dipping numerous times until you are satisfied with the depth of color. Let dry.
Rinse excess indigo out of piece and remove stitching.
Keep rinsing until water runs clear. Hang to dry.
