Unconventional Use of Materials
I designed a cylindrical shrug. It’s a bog coat style without the body, just the sleeves.
Unconventional materials used were window screen mesh leftover from repairing screens, colorful foil wrappers from chocolates and a thrift store black silk skirt.
A quick pin fit on my dress form. I wanted to check the drape of the screen mesh and the cuff shape.
I couched gold decorative thread to the mesh before constructing the cylinder.
The colorful foil candy wrappers were sandwiched between mesh pieces and lightly quilted to the cuffs.
All the seams were bias bound using the thrifted silk skirt.
The cylindrical shrug.
